Assessing the Significance of Tasmanian Early Colonial Buildings

Mary Knaggs recently completed a report with Anne McConnell, Archaeologist and Heritage Consultant. The Significance of Tasmanian Early Colonial Buildings Project, commissioned by Heritage Tasmania on behalf of the Tasmanian Heritage Council, explores what are important elements in the assessment of the cultural significance of Tasmania‟s early colonial buildings and how the state level significance of such buildings is best assessed. The project focuses on the most abundant, but least well understood, early colonial buildings – Tasmania‟s modest dwellings. The overarching aim of the project is to improve the assessment process for listing these types of dwelling on the Tasmanian Heritage Register these types of dwelling often fail to have immediately obvious significance.
